August Marks Family Winemakers Month
Statewide campaign urges support for independent wineries amid shifting consumer trends and economic headwinds.
SACRAMENTO, CA, July 30, 2025 - This August, Family Winemakers of California proudly launches Family Winemakers Month, a statewide campaign honoring the hardworking, passionate, and resilient family-owned wineries that are the heart and soul of California wine. The 2025 initiative also marks the organization’s 35th anniversary of advocacy, supporting small and mid-sized producers through decades of policy change, economic challenges, and industry evolution.
“This month—and every month—we raise a glass to the families behind the wine,” says Pete Downs, President of Family Winemakers of California. “These producers are more than winemakers—they’re multigenerational farmers, community leaders, and innovators whose contributions keep California wine country alive and thriving.”
Family Winemakers Month recognizes the vital role independent wineries play in California’s economy, agriculture, and culture. When you choose a local, family-crafted bottle, you're not just enjoying world-class wine—you’re investing in California’s future. According to a 2025 economic impact study by WineAmerica, California’s wine industry supports 393,821 jobs and generates nearly $84.5 billion in total economic activity. Family winemakers are stewards of the land and storytellers whose craft preserves tradition while embracing sustainability. Your support helps keep local agriculture strong, rural communities vibrant, and California’s cultural heritage intact. Throughout August, wine lovers, restaurants, and retailers are encouraged to:
● Visit family-owned tasting rooms across California
● Purchase wines from independent producers for summer gatherings, gifts, and celebrations
● Share their support online using hashtags: #Familywinemakers and #FamilywinemakersMonth
A downloadable media kit is available at www.familywinemakers.us, featuring branded graphics, printable signage, and sample content to help wineries promote the campaign across their tasting rooms, websites, newsletters, and social media. Access the media kit here
